About the event
100 years of Norman Thelwell
Childhood sketches begin a journey through his life’s work. Illustrations from student days, sketchbooks, diaries and letters will be on display for the first time, alongside Thelwell’s paintbrushes, easel, and the desk he drew at for over 40 years. A rare surviving Thelwell pony rocking horse is one of several items of merchandise on show.
As well as numerous pony cartoons, you'll be able to see the original preliminary pencil spread of ‘Thelwell pony’ sketches commissioned by Punch magazine, which later inspired the now-famous Penelope and Kipper partnership.
Thelwell was also a keen landscape painter, and his enduring love of the countryside is evident in the watercolours he painted of landmarks close to his home in southern Hampshire, including Mottisfont itself, which Thelwell knew well.
100 Years of Norman Thelwell runs from Saturday 21 January - Sunday 7 May, 11am-4pm (closing at 4.30pm from Saturday 11 February).
