About the event

Chapel Arts Studios proudly presents "Expressions in Clay", a captivating new exhibition by renowned ceramicist Chris Bramble, running from 17th October to 23rd November 2024.

This unique collection offers a profound exploration of clay as an expressive medium, reflecting Bramble’s diverse life experiences and rich cultural heritage. Chris Bramble, a celebrated ceramicist and teacher, has dedicated his life to mastering the art of ceramics. His work is deeply rooted in the convergence of African and European influences, manifesting in a distinctive style that marries traditional forms with contemporary techniques. Bramble’s art transcends the boundaries of craft, engaging with social, political, and personal narratives that resonate on a universal level.

"Expressions in Clay" showcases a diverse array of clay types and techniques, from figurative sculptures to abstract forms, each piece a testament to Bramble's skill and vision. The exhibition invites viewers to experience the myriad layers of his work and connect with the spirit of clay, a medium that Bramble uses to document and express the hidden aspects of today’s black culture.

Born in London and raised across Ipswich, Hastings, and Glasgow, Chris Bramble’s artistic journey began at The Glasgow School of Art, where he specialised in ceramics. His unique style is shaped by the contrast of his African heritage and European upbringing, resulting in a warm, contemporary aesthetic that reflects a blend of African forms and modern techniques. In 1985, Bramble moved to Zimbabwe, where he immersed himself in the local art scene, particularly the methods of colloquial stone sculpture. There, he learned to carve serpentines and verdites, integrating these techniques into his ceramic practice. After returning to London, Bramble completed a master’s degree in sculpture and multimedia at Westminster University before establishing his own studio in 1988. Bramble’s ceramics are inspired by life, harmony, rhythm, and dance, capturing the spirit and heartbeat of those around him. His meditative process transforms clay into vessels of cultural expression, offering a window into the nuanced dimensions of black culture.

The exhibition will be open Thursdays through to Saturdays, 11am – 4pm, between the 17th October until the 23rd November 2024, and will be held at Chapel Arts Studios, The Chapel, St Mary’s Cemetery, New Street, Andover, SP10 1DP.
