About the event

From Hollywood to Hampshire via Pirates of the Caribbean

Come and hear about the behind-the-scenes and backstage stories from Hollywood and West End theatre costume designer Nicole Small. An entertaining insight into what goes into costume design and the role it plays in making productions a success.

Having worked extensively in costume design in London’s West End and Hollywood, Nicole brings an entertaining spin on working with some of the great and the good of stage and screen. An authentic costume is essential in helping the audience believe in the story and must be functional for the actors to fulfil their roles comfortably. She will talk about how she makes the costumes to meet these requirements and will also explain special effects and the use of stunt doubles in film.

Nicole trained in Period Costume Making and Design in Liverpool. She has worked as a costume cutter/maker, supervisor and designer for film, theatre, opera and ballet for 40 years in the UK and  USA. Work includes principal costumes for all five Pirates of the Caribbean films, many Tim Burton films including Dumbo, both Alice films (Red and White Queens), Dark Shadows (Johnny Depp), Men in Black International, Fantastic Beasts, Bridgerton and The Little Mermaid (release 2023). Theatre work includes Twelfth Night at the Royal National, Romeo and Juliet at the Globe and principal costumes for Frozen London and Hamburg. She has just completed work on a new Netflix period drama, Damsel.
