Houghton Lodge Gardens unveils Spring splendour, with a vibrant start to the 2025 season

Houghton Lodge Gardens in Stockbridge, Hampshire, has officially opened its gates for the 2025 season, welcoming visitors to a beautiful display of spring’s awakening.

The gardens have blossomed to life, with a carpet of vibrant blue scilla leading visitors towards the iconic 18th century Cottage Orné, while splashes of daffodils in varying shades of yellow add cheerful bursts of colour along the way. The formal and informal gardens above the picturesque River Test provide a range of horticultural delights, promising an inspiring experience for all.

"We are thrilled to welcome both returning friends and new visitors to Houghton Lodge Gardens this spring," says owner Sophie Busk. "The gardens are looking promising for a magnificent season, thanks to the gardening and estate team, who have worked tirelessly over the closed season. From the delicate blooms of spring to the historical intrigue of the house, there’s something for everyone to enjoy."


Visitors also have the opportunity to delve into the rich history of Houghton Lodge with guided tours of the Grade II* listed Cottage Orné. Discover fascinating tales and architectural marvels, offering a unique glimpse into the estate’s storied past. With various dates through the season, pre-booking is strongly advised. 


There are plenty of events to enjoy this season in partnership with The Glass House. Indulge in the flavours of Hampshire at The Glass House Food Festival on Saturday 26 April. Featuring over 45 local food and drink producers, this free event (garden admission applies to explore gardens) is a culinary celebration of the region’s finest offerings. From 10am to 5pm, visitors can savour a diverse range of delectable treats.


On the 15th of June, enjoy an enchanting evening of open-air theatre as The Lord Chamberlain’s Men perform Shakespeare’s beloved romantic comedy, "Twelfth Night". Set against the stunning backdrop of the gardens, this performance promises an unforgettable experience. Early booking is recommended. 


Houghton Lodge Gardens will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth on the 15th of August with a magical outdoor cinema screening of Pride & Prejudice, presented by The Glass House. What better way to honour the literary icon than in Hampshire, where she spent significant portions of her life?


Beyond the initial spring flourish, Houghton Lodge Gardens promises a continuous display of colour throughout the season. Visitors can anticipate a kaleidoscope of blooms, beginning with the striking irises. The Instagram-worthy peony walk will offer a feast for the eyes, followed by the romantic American Pillar rose arbor. The walled garden will fill with the fragrance of vintage roses, while the Oriental garden bursts with delicate cherry blossoms. As summer progresses, the long border will showcase a vibrant array of perennials, culminating in the dazzling display of dahlias in late summer. This ever-evolving displays ensure that each visit to Houghton Lodge Gardens offers a unique and memorable experience.
